About Our Program

Founded in 2023,

EMERGE, the GSCC Nurse Practitioner Residency Program is a comprehensive, year-long educational journey, integrating hands-on clinical training, specialty rotations, and skills education to offer a balanced experience for recent Nurse Practitioner graduates. Our program facilitates a collaborative working environment with seasoned healthcare professionals from diverse fields such as women's health, lifestyle medicine, pharmacy, and behavioral health, thus providing a unique opportunity to expand skills and knowledge.

How it Works

Program Schedule and Selection Process
Our training program commences on the first Monday in October, extending over a 12-month period. Each year, we choose six candidates for our program.

Clinical Experience and Residency Responsibilities
Residents spend four days a week gaining hands-on experience within the GSCC or an assigned rotation outside the health center. Here, they work alongside proficient Advanced Practice Providers or Physicians, managing a range of acute and chronic conditions typically seen in community health.  Residents are paired and jointly manage a panel of patients, allowing residents the opportunity to engage in teamwork while gaining an understanding of the longitudinal nature of primary care practice.

Curriculum and Professional Development
Our clinical curriculum is tailored to complement and build upon the existing expertise of recent graduates. It offers a gradual increase in clinical experiences and professional responsibilities, and provides dedicated preceptor support during clinical rotations, leadership development and additional case reviews during weekly provider meetings, including constructive feedback to foster learning and boost confidence.

Specialty Rotations
The training program includes 4 internal specialty rotations at different GSCC clinic locations. These rotations cover areas such as Behavioral Health, Women’s Health, Lifestyle Medicine, and Geriatrics. In collaboration with our community partners, we also offer external rotations which may include Urgent Care, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Podiatry, Ear, Nose and Throat and Neurology.

Didactics
Nurse practitioner residents will participate in weekly didactic sessions throughout the year which include grand round lectures, collaborative case conferences, journal club, quality improvement project reviews and hands-on skills training.  These activities will focus on disease processes and interventions while building confidence in the resident’s ability to generate robust differential diagnoses and treatment plans.

Quality Improvement Project
Each cohort of residents also undertakes a group Quality Improvement Project. This project, led by the QI/QA Director, is tailored to meet organizational quality improvement objectives and increase the resident’s understanding of the Plan Do Study Act process.

Wellness Program
The Nurse Practitioner Resident Wellness Program is a comprehensive initiative that focuses on fostering the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of nurse practitioner residents. The program acknowledges the rigorous demands of healthcare practice, particularly during the training phase, and aims to support the overall health and wellness of the residents to ensure optimal productivity and job satisfaction.

The program offers various resources and activities to address the multiple facets of wellness. Physical wellness resources may include access to fitness facilities, nutritional guidance, and proactive preventive health screenings. Emotional and psychological support could involve stress management workshops, counseling services, and mindfulness training.

Furthermore, the program recognizes the value of social interaction and community involvement for overall well-being. It encourages peer support groups, team-building activities, and community service opportunities. This holistic approach ensures that the residents can maintain a balanced lifestyle while developing their professional skills in a supportive and healthy environment.

In summary, the Nurse Practitioner Resident Wellness Program represents a commitment to nurturing the well-being of nurse practitioner residents. It provides an array of resources and activities to promote physical health, emotional resilience, and social connectivity, ensuring a balanced and rewarding residency experience.
